Sweden to upgrade its Gripen fighter jets
Sweden-based defense and aerospace company Saab announced on Friday that it has received an order from the Swedish Defense Supplies Administration (FMV) to ensure its operational capabilities. continuously and provide capacity enhancements to the JAS 39 Gripen C/D fighter.
As noted by the company, the order value is approximately 3.5 billion SEK ($340 million) and the contract period is 2023-2029.
The contract also includes options to allow FMV to order additional capacity to increase capacity in 2023.

Improvements will provide Sweden with a more effective and powerful combat capability. The aircraft will be equipped with a new version of the engine, which will improve flight performance. A more effective electronic warfare system will also be introduced and the upgrade will facilitate increased attack capabilities with new payloads.
The order includes an upgrade to Saab’s latest combat radar, which offers higher performance, an emphasis on enhanced combat capabilities, and expanded detection and tracking range. It also includes an upgraded and future-proof avionics system that, among other features, enables rapid software updates for sensor functionality.
“This upgrade will provide the Swedish Air Force with a significantly stronger combat capability. This contract is a huge step forward in radar performance and functionality, both in hardware and software, and will future-proof Gripen C/D,” said Jonas Hjelm, Head of Division Saab’s business said.
The capacity enhancement will enable better interoperability between Gripen C/D and Gripen E, for example by upgrading data link and support systems. Interoperability is a prerequisite as the platforms will be used in parallel for many years.
