Via Sean Jones: Eddie Hearn believes he and his boxer Devin Haney are in ample strength in the fight negotiations with George Kambosos Jr. He doesn’t have many options for other big battles.
Matchroom Boxing promoter Hearn is currently reviewing an offer from Kambosos management for a match they want to take place on June 5 in Australia.
Although Hearn says they don’t intend to cause difficulties in negotiations, his words suggest otherwise. Haney, 23, isn’t a great pick for Kambosos (20-0, 10 KOs) because it’s a fight that won’t generate much excitement and it’s the wrong style for him.
If you’re the Kambosos, you’d better take out another opponent while he waits for Vasyl Lomachenko to return from Ukraine or let Ryan Garcia prepare for next month’s return match against Emmanuel Tagoe.
When you have a promoter like Hearn who believes that Kambosos has no choice but to Haney, that’s a problem.
It’s probably not worth it for Kambosos to go that route because he has so many options available to him.
If this is the best financial deal Kambosos can get now that Lomachenko is out of the picture, he and his promoter Lou DiBella need to realize that they can make good money by participating. a couple of smaller fights while they wait for Lomachenko, Ryan Garcia and Gervonta’ Tank Davis.
“We received news yesterday that [Vasly Lomachenko] excluded himself for that fight. George Kambosos kindly said, “I’ll fight Devin Haney instead,” Eddie Hearn told iFL TV. “Why him? [Kambosos] didn’t fight him in the first place?
“We could have done this deal. We received an offer for this fight, which myself and Bill Haney are considering. We want the fight; We will have no trouble.
“They don’t have many options now, to be honest with you,” says Learn about Team Kambosos. “We’ve put our name forward, dealing with people who say, ‘Haney doesn’t want to fight,'” Hearn said.
If Hearn really believes that the Kambosos don’t have many options and that Haney is the only game in town, then that will spell trouble when it comes to negotiations.
Kambosos should test that theory by telling Haney to get lost and then turn around and fight Tank Davis or Ryan Garcia.
“We accepted everything we asked for and now we are ready to make the deal,” Hearn said. “So fingers crossed — Devin Haney versus George Kambosos for the undisputed lightweight world championship.
“We will solve the problem for Australia. We have a call today with Bill Haney, Devin and team and we hope to wrap up the call in the near future.
“The offer for this fight is a war in Australia. There are things in the offer that we have to consider, and we have to consider,” Hearn said.
“Finance is one thing. I think that’s the biggest obstacle, but rematches and things like that. We have to see if that is the best move for Devin Haney.
Kambosos would make a mistake if he agreed to a rematch in the US Currently, Kambosos and his team are calling for shots. If Haney wants that fight bad enough, he’ll agree to a rematch in Australia, not in the US
“Ultimately, it was Devin Haney’s chance to become the undisputed lightweight world champion,” Hearn said. “It’s what he dreams of, and that’s what I’d like to see him do.
“I believe he is the lightest person in the worldand I want to see him lift all the belts as soon as possible,” Hearn said.
Many boxing fans will disagree with Hearn on his belief that Haney is “the lightest person in the world.” There are a handful of boxers at 135 capable of beating Haney. Whether Kambosos is one of them remains to be seen, but for sure, this group will defeat him:
