Via Chris Williams: Terence Crawford is under fire from fans for pulling out of negotiations for a match against Errol Spence Jr to sign against David Avanesyan on December 10.
Crawford’s credibility was hit hard with the move. It’s hard, then, to imagine Spence trusting Crawford enough to want to extend the negotiations later.
Crawford should have informed Spence that he was initiating negotiations with Avanesyan so he could continue to set up his own fight.
Oddly, Crawford said he and Spence could renew the negotiations after the war with Avanesyan. That sounds unrealistic, given what happened.
Then you could argue that they would never fight. Crawford burned a bridge with this move, and it is doubtful that Spence will trust him enough to want to restart negotiations.
Fans see it as a mistake by Crawford to avoid losing to Spence in the knockout round, which will affect his career and future earning in the sport.
Indeed, many people think that Crawford negotiated secretly for months with Avanesyan (29-3-1, 17 KOs) while still negotiating with Spence. So Spence wasted time he could have used to set up his own fight.
With this move by Crawford (38-0.29 KO), I don’t know how Spence might consider restarting negotiations with Terence after the fight with Avanesyan. Spence wasted his time setting up a fight.
If Crawford had only signed a few months ago, they could have fought in November.
Spence (28-0, 22 KOs) is looking to set up a fight of his own against Emantas Stanionis, but it remains to be seen if that fight can be negotiated in time for Errol to fight in December. .
Crawford reportedly received over $10 million for BLK Prime’s battle of Avanesyan, who will show off the pay-per-view fight for $39.95 per household.
Prices are lower than today’s PPV matches, but because Crawford vs. Avanesyan isn’t a pay-per-view match, so boxing fans will likely avoid buying it.
Crawford is getting into the fight with Avanesyan because he doesn’t want to be inactive for a year. If that was the case, he should have tried his best in negotiations and fighting with Spence so he wouldn’t be passive.

“This bull [Spence] got into a car accident and turned right back and fought Danny [Garcia]. He comes right back while this mother fucks [Crawford] still unharmed, and they still didn’t fight anyone.
“He was fighting with Porter. It’s a dog, but it’s right in front of you. It was a mock war anyway. They shouldn’t have stopped it. That’s *** the bull. All he is doing is fabricated.
“I told people I never liked Terence Crawford. I never liked him as a fighter. I want him to fight my man Ray Robinson here. Ray was the last to beat him in the amateur world. Ray defeated him in the amateurs and was the last to beat him.
“Ray called him out, and he kept saying all that. They then turned around and picked Mean Machine in front of Ray as Terence Crawford was said to have fought him.
“Ray hit his *** because they thought Ray wouldn’t beat him. Ray finished with his whistle. They call it a draw, it’s a bull. Mean Machine wouldn’t have fought that fight with Crawford, but he ended up fighting Crawford anyway.
“Terence Crawford is still not going to fight anyone. That’s why he held out. Is he 35 years old now? 35 years old. Basically, he has to achieve what he can get right now.
“Basically, he’s just cashing out, but you’re making money the wrong way, champ. You can’t be pound-for-pound when you’re not fighting anyone. How can you go up with Canelo when you’re not fighting anyone?
“When you look at your resume, you have a resume of a bull. Anyone who likes Terence Crawford and likes that, he’ll have a bull’s-eye résumé. I think Boots’ resume is better than his. He doesn’t hit anyone,” Coach L.
