In line with its shared goal of making the full-size pickup as much as possible for as many people as possible, GMC is adding its already extensive Sierra lineup in two ways for 2022. Luxury is enamored with the Denali Ultimate, a new front end with more premium interior materials, 22-inch wheels, a black chrome grille and electrically adjustable side rails. For the outdoor setup, the AT4X builds on the existing off-road-oriented AT4 by adding luxurious finishes and unique shock absorbers, electronic locking front and rear differentials and local tyres. Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac mud figure.
The Consumer Guide sampled the ½-ton Sierra 1500 AT4X which starts at $74,994 including shipping, but is optionally lightweight to $76,790. In addition to what makes it the AT4X, the test truck incorporates other changes for the 2022 GMC including a new grille and headlamp design, an updated instrument cluster, and a 13-inch infotainment display. ,4 inches.
A member of the Sierra family, the AT4X comes with a 420hp 6.2-liter V8 and a 10-speed automatic transmission.. There’s a healthy level of “go” in the Ecotec3 engine with 460 lb-ft of torque. It climbs smoothly to highway speeds with the aid of a 10-speed transmission, which provides timely knockdowns in merge and overtake situations. The AT4X is also equipped with an engine cooler and an external transmission as standard.
How highway pickup trucks work
6.2 has stop/start technology and Dynamic Fuel Management that can activate two, four, six or all eight cylinders according to driving conditions. Even with all that – surprise, surprise – it’s not the gas tank. This reviewer scored just 15.47 mpg after driving 94.1 miles, 37% of which was city-style mileage. That leaves the truck just 16 mpg behind the EPA estimates it will receive in combined city/highway operation, and very short of the 18 mpg highway forecast. (City driving gets the feds pegged at 14 mpg.)

The AT4bowed when the current generation of Sierras first launched in 2019, bringing GMC into the off-road truck arena by not lifting the 2-inch suspension, skid plates to protect the bottoms of critical mechanical systems, and off-road adjustable dampers. AT4X is cut from the same fabric with Multimatic DSSV buffer three-valve dampers, increasing suspension travel, electronic differential, 3.23:1 rear axle ratio, large Goodyear leather on 18-inch gloss black alloy wheels, downhill control system, 120 volt power outlet in the cargo bed, controls brake and shake the trailer. As an urban commuter – which is how the CG editors used it during their testing – it’s not the quietest full-size pickup nor the quietest on high. su young met the road. However, steering and handling are not particularly clingy to the driver.
Interior appointments allow AT4X passengers to enjoy relative comfort. Full-grain leather seats (Black Obsidian Rush with white piping) are heated in both rows. The front seats are also ventilated, 16-way electric adjustment, massage function, memory for the driver’s seat. The leather-wrapped steering wheel is also heated, and it’s mounted on a tilt/telescopic power steering column. Above, a microscopic header makes room for a power sunroof. High-quality flooring underfoot. Vanta ash wood trim appears on the dashboard and doors.
Comfort and convenience come from dual-zone climate control and Bose brand audio with 12 speakers. The GMC Premium infotainment system uses a new large touchscreen and integrated compatibility with Google devices. Apple CarPlay / Android Auto smartphone mirroring is wireless. Other standard equipment features are satellite radio, wireless charging, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Drivers get their information from a new 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 15-inch front display and rearview mirror.

The current Sierra is very roomy, especially like a crew cab, that’s the only way the AT4X came about. Personal storage in the experimental truck abounds with double gloveboxes; a large, covered control box; and large pockets at all doors. The back of the rear seats is spacious, split in 60/40 with built-in storage compartments. However, the driver’s visibility is somewhat affected by the thick front pillars and side roofs. Additionally, the increased forklift height can challenge shorter sitters. While they weren’t meant for that, the dealer-installed rocker guards on the test truck provided something solid for easier entry but not wide enough to support exits . The large infotainment screen features large menu icons, making it easier to get to the section you want. Creating audio presets is quite intuitive and direct. The climate system has handy dials for setting the temperature but a cluster of buttons for its other features.
There’s LED ambient lighting on the exterior – even for the cargo bed – heated power folding mirrors and spray pads for the 5.8-foot “short box” bed are unique to this model. The tailgate is a “MultiPro” pioneered by GMC, notable for its separate hinged “mini-port” section that can be configured to hold several convenient positions. In the AT4X, MultiPro has a built-in Kicker audio system to play streaming content from connected Bluetooth devices — handy for outdoor gatherings. A weather amplifier is hidden in the back door.

Various safety and driver assistance technologies are also included. The list includes automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, front pedestrian braking and rear pedestrian warning, rear cross-traffic braking, lane keep assist and lane departure warning. , rear distance indicator, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking assist, side blind zone warning for trailers, surround view camera with bed view and automatic high beam headlights motion.
While perhaps not a perfect all-terrain vehicle like some of the larger trucks on the market (it lacks modifications to maximize approach and departure angles, for example), the AT4X still combines There are a lot of things that people need where the road isn’t sometimes going to be appreciated. They’ll appreciate them even more when immersing themselves in the truck’s extras.
