The best budget-friendly denim shorts
Year after year, summer after summer, we seem to be looking for the same shorts to wear over and over again! Some of us are Old Navy girls have hearts, some are loyal to Target, and most of us are pretty loyal to both. Old Navy and Target both carry a huge selection of shorts with a variety of soles and size options at prices we can totally drop! So which store has nicer shorts, you ask? The Team LIY and Ambassador Decided to find out for yourself! We used to order several styles of denim shorts from Target and Old Navy and we’re sharing our favorite pairs below in a short demonstration: Target compare to Old Navy. Here are our results!
Old Navy high-waisted straight shorts [true to size, wearing in 4] // Target high curve midi jean shorts [size up one, wearing in 6]
In total transparency, I don’t think I would order either of these shorts. While I’m usually an Old Navy shorts girl when it comes to between the two, I’m not overly impressed with the specific pairs I’ve purchased, both from Target & Old Navy. Maybe I’ve become too much like a pair of jean shorts, but both pairs feel a bit stiff and pretty tight past the thighs [that could be due to too many High Noons ;)]. All in all, I still vote for Old Navy! Ps. All budgets aside, this are the shorts that I can’t stop wearing this summer!
My hobbies is: Old Navy
Old Navy Mid Rise Boyfriend Torn jean shorts [TTS, wearing 10] // Target Curvy Vintage Midi Shorts
Okay, so here’s the thing, I love these Navy shorts out of the package – fit, look, length, all. The Target pair has a little more work to do. The Old Navy boyfriend fit pair is perfect for my size 8-10 pear. The Target pair squeeze a little tighter in the belly area, and I don’t like the length unless I roll them up! So I’m debating the use of Fabric glue and bind these bad boys of Target to keep them going! But overall, the winner is the Old Navy pair, through and through!
Target shorts (TTS, wear 10 but can do 8) // Old Navy Boyfriend shorts (size up one, wear 10 pieces) // Jumpsuit
I’ve tried several styles of shorts at both Target and Old Navy, and out of about eight pairs of shorts I’ve tried on, Old Navy always my favorite! I really like both of these pairs, but Target pair a bit too big in the crotch area. When I reduced the size, they were a little too tight at the waist! I think they’d be super cute in the right person, just not for me! The Old navy couple doesn’t squeeze the thighs like roll-up shorts usually do, so that’s an automatic win for me!
Target Wild Fable Mom Jean Shorts [true to size] // Old Navy Mid Rise Light Wash Jean Shorts [size down one] // Tee [size down if in between] // Sandal [size down .5]
Now, I’m feeling a bit weird shopping for jean shorts now in my second trimester – so feel free to listen to what I have to say with a grain of salt The shorts I can The casual pick based on style is a bit out of the way as I’m looking more for relaxation and comfort to get through the summer, but HE can they be cute too?! This pair from Old Navy BIG runs so definitely downsize, but they have a lot of stretch and are extremely comfortable. That’s why they’ve become my favorites in the end! I love the style of this pair from Target, but they don’t have the comfort I’m looking for and the feel of a real denim. No stretch is not cutting it for me current!

Old Navy high waisted Fly Cut Off Jean Shorts [sized up 1, wearing 6] // Target High Rise Vintage Midi Jeans Shorts [sized up 1, wearing 6] // Tank [TTS, wearing Small] // Sandal [TTS, wearing 10]
I choose this pair from Old Navy for the high waist and 5-inch sole. I usually go 1 size up in shorts, but wish I went 2 sizes up in these for leg room! The material is stretchy and I love the fluttery buttons, but I don’t like the way they fit my feet. This from Target is a winner for me! I like a fly button and I’m happy with the 4-inch pad on my 6-foot frame. These are already in my summer jean shorts rotation!
Old Navy High Rise A Line Cut Off shorts [true to size] // Target Universal Thread High Rise Midi Jean Short [size down one] // Top [true to size] // Similar seasoning
Debbie here compares two pairs of shorts. I really like the length of Target shorts but they’re not as high-waisted as I’d like them to be. The Old navy couple came right above my navel, but Target’s shorts just fell slightly below. Although the length of the Old Navy shorts is a bit shorter than I would like, I still think they are my favorite choice. Both are very stretchy and comfortable.

Target Mid Rip Stretch Denim Shorts [true to size, wearing 8] // Old Navy High Waistline Fly Straight Cut off [sized up one, wearing 10]
I tried 2 different pairs of jeans; one target word and one old navy word. The Target shorts are my winners for these reasons: they’re super soft and don’t suck on my thighs. The only downside I’ve noticed is that they’re not long enough for my 34-inch legs. Shorts from Old Navy, run VERY small. I’m a size up to 10, abducting me feels like I’m being squeezed into them. I like the detail and length of the fly button, but the material is unremarkable, and too snug!
