More than ever, rod representations are happening for the spectrums – transitional, non-binary, different – on some of television’s most anticipated and impactful shows.
Increasingly, shows are created by gay people and feature actors and writers exclusively. Some shows even feature the entire LGBTQ+ crew behind the scenes. Luckily, the days of a gay best friend or lovable lesbian aunt are a thing of the past. These are real characters with real stories to tell.
Notable developments are taking place across all different genres of television — from comedy to drama, reality to animation — on both television and streaming.
In a February study released by GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Coalition Against Defamation), has revealed that 11.9% of characters on broadcast television are LGBTQ+, a new record high.
For the first time, GLAAD also analyzed the eight most prominent streaming services — Amazon, Hulu, Netflix, Peacock, Paramount+, Apple TV+, Disney+, and HBO Max — and found 245 regular characters from the series. LGBTQ+ and 113 LGBTQ+ recurring characters on their show.
