The Coyotes owner said he could not comment officially amid the relocation news
Arizona Coyotes president and governor Alex Meruelo said he could not make any official public comments on the team's relocation in a statement released on X, formerly Twitter, on Saturday.
“There has been a lot of discussion in recent days about the future of the Arizona Coyotes,” Meruelo said in the statement. “We are focused on the numerous unresolved issues and therefore we are unable to make any formal public comments at this time.”
Meruelo also pledged to publicly address any concerns “as soon as possible.”
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported Friday that Coyotes players were informed by general manager Bill Armstrong that the team would, in fact, be moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. Earlier, Coyotes forward Lawson Crouse told reporters in Edmonton that the players had no additional information that had not been made public.
Armstrong declined to comment.
Meruelo has been the Coyotes' owner since 2019, when he purchased a majority ownership stake. He becomes the sole owner in 2023.
Friedman reported Wednesday that the NHL is acting as broker between Meruelo and Ryan Smith, owner of Smith Entertainment Group, who plans to buy the team.
