The Man and the Machine’ will be a motion picture
Michael Mann’s Coming Ferrari The film is of particular interest in car and driver office. That’s partly due to, oh, Ferraris, but even more so because it’s based on the book Enzo Ferrari: The Man and the Machine by a long time CD editor, latecomer Brock Yates.
Brock published his book in 1991 and plans to bring it to the big screen. But like exotic sports cars, movies can hardly escape the drawing board. Not a newbie to screenwriting, Brock has had financial (if not important) success with the years 1981 Run cannons. He has attracted the interest of A-list directors Mann and Sydney Pollack, as well as Andre Morgan, who produced Run cannons. Perhaps less fortunate, Ferrari There was also the interest of Cecchi Gori Pictures, an Italian production company that eventually filed for bankruptcy and saw its main producer thrown in jail for fraud.
The project fell into limbo until 2014, when Brock’s wife received a phone call asking if they wanted to reactivate it. Brock already had Alzheimer’s, so Lady Pamela, as Brock used to call her, took his place. Mann stuck to the script, focusing on 1957, a tumultuous year in Ferrari’s personal and professional life, when his marriage fell apart and his factory went bankrupt. Perhaps it is fitting that such a tumultuous story has an equally tangled path onto the screen.
Production is running at full throttle now. Filming begins in Ferrari’s hometown of Modena in 2022, with a target release date this year. As Enzo is Adam Driver, perhaps wanting to use the Italian accent he has honed Gucci’s house. Penélope Cruz plays Laura, Enzo’s wife, while Shailene Woodley plays longtime mistress Lina Lardi. As for the track scenes, real-life racer Patrick Dempsey won’t have to struggle to play Ferrari’s Piero Taruffi. Brock didn’t live to see his Enzo on screen, but he always knew it would make for a horror movie.
