The passionate entry phase for the Derby is eliminated
Derby will move away from the traditional entry stage and will operate on a three-year-old single entry system from the 2024 Classic run.
A statement released on Thursday by Jockey Club Racecourses, the company that owns Epsom Downs, home of the Derby and the Oaks, said: “This move comes after discussion with stakeholders and follows: when the three-year-old single-entry system worked well for the 2022 race, when the highly anticipated entry period in 2020 was not considered viable due to the pandemic.
“Therefore, the expected entry for the 2024 race, which normally takes place in early December, will not take place. More information on the prize fund, participation stages and structure for Derby 2024 will be available through the regular process and in publications next year, including the Flat Sample Book and the Program Book. “
In 2021, online car retailer Cazoo was announced as the new sponsor of the Derby meeting, but that deal is now closed. Next year’s Derby, which closed with highly anticipated entries last December, has a total prize pool of £1.5 million. The remaining entry stages will be in the traditional stage next spring.
Andrew Cooper, head of racing, said: “The aspirational participation system is something we always review every year before we confirm, as we are constantly working to ensure all aspects of The Derby are all optimized to change behavior and trends in sport and the wider world. and secretary of course at Epsom Downs.
“The pandemic has given us an opportunity to test whether a three-year-old system works, and has consulted with participants before, during and since it took place. At the beginning of this year, our view was that the increased flexibility that the removal of the aspiration stage brings is more of a reflection of how trainers and owners today tend to operate. “
