The Signs You Need To Lower Your Cortisol



There’s nothing worse than things that raise your cortisol.

You know what I mean – when an alarm goes off and across the room, when a dog barks an octave, or when someone’s text message notification rings a million times…

But really, it’s like nails on a blackboard.

Just to say the least: I can’t handle when people chew apples. This is very annoying because Zaza is currently obsessed with the apple. She would take a giant apple out of the whole thing and I could hardly stand it. LAUGH.

Either way, you got the point. Sound causes cortisol everywhere. Especially in 2022. You can’t get rid of them because people expect 24/7 accessibility.

When we lived in LA, there were strange sounds everywhere. Sirens, sirens, helicopters, already too many. One of my goals in Austin was to get rid of as much annoying sounds as possible. It sounds psychological, but these small changes ultimately lead to a big difference.

In fact, my friend Ingrid changed her doorbell to play Beethoven’s Für Elise & I think it’s genius.

When we moved into the house in Austin, we received a lot of orders, especially from Amazon, and this flow caused the doorbell to ring every 5 seconds.

Side note: keeping track of all my facilities, kitchen must-haves helps me stay organized this.

To achieve this from scratch, I needed to find something that said ‘please don’t’ but was also warm and nice. There’s no reason to be rude about it, right?

After searching online for about half an hour, I found this beautiful wooden sign with black letters that read:

That added bonus is from a small business on Etsy and they are custom made. You guys went crazy when I posted it on Instagram so I guess a lot of you are in the same boat?

When I’m reading Not yet tamed by Glennon Doyle (with episode above TSC HIM & HER incredible), she talked a little bit about the doorbell and its function. If you haven’t read it yet Not yet tamed You have to, though, but here’s what Glennon hilariously had to say about it:

“It took me a solid minute to understand: A siren is a doorbell. Someone is ringing my doorbell. I ran out of the office to find my children also stunned, frozen and waiting for instructions on how to respond to this impending home invasion. We stared at each other, counted the number of people, and together we went through the five stages of the grieving doorbell. “

Basically, yes, hearing your doorbell is intrusive.

I just think that if you can set boundaries around small areas of your life like this it can be really beneficial. Things like turning off phone notifications, having more soothing text sounds, and using a bedtime app on your phone look like this:

You set it up in the Health app on your iPhone, and it wakes you up pleasantly and gradually instead of some shrill alarm sound.

Also, when someone is texting, the typing sound on the keyboard will be 100% muted.

Other tips are to surround yourself with positive people who are uplifting, use noise canceling headphones (I use them for meditationbreathe, listen to the healing frequency and be alone with my thoughts).

Like I said, we live in this world where everyone expects to have access to you at all times. Between the TV, the phone, the doorbell, the baby crying, the dog barking, it’s just too much stimulation. We need some quiet time to be alone with our thoughts.

The most self-aware people are those who can just sit and be with themselves. Meditation helps me with this, but a lot of people do it with walking or lounging thinking time (I even put thinking time in my calendar.) Bill Gates made one thinking week!

Try it. It will make you self-aware and help you to understand better. This post is about doorbell signs but also about other ways to protect your peace.

Highly recommend buying one of these, especially if you have babies napping or dogs barking, or you could always just install a Beethoven doorbell like Ingrid.
