The story behind McDonald's N64 kiosk filled with Xbox 360s
A Reddit user found something rather strange in a dentist's waiting room: An old McDonald's N64 video game kiosk that had been converted into an Xbox 360 console complete with multiple controllers and games. play.
The dentist's office waiting room can be a stressful place as you wait to begin whatever procedure gets you there. Even a simple cleaning or check-up can cause a lot of stress, especially for young children, who may have had a few bad experiences with dental cleaners. So instead of them playing games on your phone and draining the battery or making them read 5 month old issues of a random fashion magazine, why not let them play Xbox 360 as a distraction them from their upcoming original channel? At least one dentist seems to think it's a pretty good idea.
On April 16, Reddit user Asleep-Tumbleweed-99 Posted some pictures on the Xbox 360 subreddit of the Xbox 360 kiosk in his dentist's waiting room.
“Pretty cool. [Doritos Crash Course] is what I see on one of them and the other just shows the scoreboard,” Asleep-Tumbleweed-99 explained. “It's for little kids going to the dentist so I really don't want to play it because I'm almost 30 and don't want to look like a creep LOL.”
Even though they didn't play it, the user “had to post” about the discovery, adding: “You don't see these anymore, especially an old Xbox 360.”
Others quickly chimed in, pointing out that the kiosk in the office looked very similar N64 machines were found inside some McDonald's restaurants back in the late 90s and early 2000s. Digging a little deeper, however, this isn't simply an old N64 kiosk with some Xbox 360 consoles installed in it.
The true story behind this Xbox 360 dentist kiosk
At first, I thought someone had taken an old kiosk and cleaned it up, removed the McDonald's logo from the tall column protruding above, repainted the dome red and silver, and pulled out the old screen and control panel. They were later replaced by three devices from a company called KidzPacespecializes in selling self-contained video game devices designed for restaurants, businesses, hospitals, hotels, and basically anywhere else where bored kids might be waiting around .
However, digging deeper, I discovered that this device was not a refurbished kiosk from the 90s but a product that KidzPace used to sell. A representative told me they no longer offer the Xbox 360 model. But I found a 2017 one YouTube videos posted by the company shows it.
Looking closer, it looks like the company reused shells left over from those old N64 kiosks because—after more research—I discovered that KidzPace built those old McDonald's machines Same in the old days. Actually, they still making games for the fast food giant to this day.
If you are curious, just buy an Xbox Series S standalone player a representative told me that from KidzPace in 2024 will cost you $3,395, and that doesn't include shipping. Sorry!
Anyway, so yeah, what are we talking about again?
Oh yeah, that weird old Xbox 360 kiosk in the dentist's office that someone posted on Reddit. Yes, it's real. It's something you can buy and it's probably not made from a real old McDonald's N64 kiosk. But it might share some DNA with those retro devices, and maybe some plastic, too.
I'll stop digging into this now before I find some new information that leads me down another rabbit hole.
