Strip mall, as Myriam Gurban writes in “A witch goes to a strip mall and…,” is a place where people in Los Angeles can count on highly effective magic. The thrill of the strip mall is how people move endlessly through it and bring their unique experiences and styles with them. How they present themselves. The way they bring their people into whatever they’re doing. There are many reasons why one might enter a strip mall. Laundry. prowled. Getting their nails done. Fill their water. Dining at the restaurant. There is a hem taken in. Pick up a package. Regardless of the type of outing, a strip mall is for pull-ups with a purpose.
Photographer Nichelle Dailey and artist Sissòn — with the help of general fashion director Keyla Marquez — spent a day exploring the high-fashion hangout that is the LA strip mall. They bounced from one place to another, from one suitable place to another. As the light changes from light to dark, so does the mood. Energy can be a difficult thing to capture, but what happens in front of Dailey’s lens is nothing more than supernatural. This photo essay is testament to the fact that great things happen when you park your car and get out. Sometimes you just need a little space to cook.
