Paul Struthers will step down as chief executive officer of the Professional Horsemen’s Association after 10 years in the position. His resignation comes amid more criticism from the PJA leadership following the Bryony Frost/Robbie Dunne hearing. Dale Gibson has been appointed interim chief executive officer.
“During my time at the PJA, I have been incredibly fortunate to represent horse racers for whom I have nothing but complete admiration,” Struthers said in a statement. “In my dealings with hundreds of players over the years, I have learned a lot from them and strive to treat everyone with sincerity, respect and courtesy.
“Due to the restless nature of their lives, equestrians do need a PJA available and the role is a way of life, not a job. Many in the race will sympathize, this has taken a significant toll on my family and personal life, and this is the right time to step aside.
“To represent the courageous, dedicated and resilient men and women who make up our diverse membership has been the greatest privilege of my career. I want to thank everyone who has supported me in my role and I am incredibly proud of what PJA has achieved over the past 10 years. This is only possible thanks to a talented, hard-working team who share a passion for the work and an incredibly supportive member.
“Ultimately, I am very confident that any recommendations and improvement processes that the PJA and the sport make will serve all of our members well and improve their lives. They deserve nothing more and nothing less.”
PJA President Jon Holmes said, “We regret to accept Paul’s resignation, but we understand and accept Paul’s decision. Paul has dedicated a decade of his life to tirelessly striving to improve the lives of our charioteers. Me and the entire team here want to pay tribute to Paul and thank him for all he has done during a decade of selfless service.”
