This summer, HBO introduced two more self-referential stories about the strides of television making: Irma Vep, a miniseries remake of Oliver Assayas’ 1996 film of the same name, itself about a remake of a French silent film; and Practise, comedian Nathan Fielder’s weird, recursive, hellish reality show may not be a reality show (but it’s certainly about the nature of reality). Opposed to Restart, this super comedy pair couldn’t be further from a traditional sitcom, and they both molded their forms into something that felt new. But Practise, where Fielder encourages people to rehearse important conversations or events in their lives, building detailed replicas of the environment in which they plan to conduct conversations or events, close to the artist. performance more than anything else. It’s too unwieldy to compare with many others.
So come back Irma Vep. Alike Restart, Irma Vep put yourself in a remake culture. Instead of a Hollywood plot, it takes place in France, as a director tries to stay relevant by reimagining one of his old hit movies into an online TV show. Both shows find humor in how futile efforts to create art from “IP” can be. Like Restart Starting off, Key’s lead actor Reed Sterling has been struggling to find meaningful work since the end of the original series, and hopefully a more serious conscious update will give him the opportunity. show the world he can really act.
