the Toughest, Funniest Nun on TV
You’ve never seen a nun like Andrea Martin’s “Sister Andrea” on Paramount + of Sinister. Blushing at first, one might mistake her for an ordinary woman of God; in fact, the characters around her tend to do that. But like all of Martin’s characters — from Aunt Voula in My Big Fat Greece wedding to Francesca Lovatelli on Good fight– anyone who underestimates our Sister in Christ to do so endangers themselves.
Sinister creators Robert and Michelle King (coincidentally also born Good fight) knew what they were doing when they brought Martin on as a regular series for this season, leading to a spectacular closing Sunday night. In fact, Sister Andrea may be the most formidable nun we’ve seen on screen in recent memory; she kills demons that no one else can see, and she’s the only one who always puts Leland Townsend (played by Michael Emerson, our brilliant TV villain) in his place. ta.
More importantly, however, Sister Andrea is a force of humor to be reckoned with — a dry sense of humor, a goofy smile, and an unconventional quote. Her main passion in life (aside from riding the bus) seems to allow people around her to think they’re in control when really, like Leland, she’s the one pulling the strings.
For example, consider the third season of this season, “Demon of Sex. ” Andrea sits quietly during a counseling session in which psychotherapist Kristen Bouchard (Katja Herbers) advises a couple who can’t have sex without hives, and in one upset they found giant claw marks on their backs. Though Kristen is reluctant to let Andrea sit in, the superstitious nun is the only one who really knows what’s going on: As the pair discuss their problems with Kristen, Andrea stares at a demon inside room corner.
When David asked why he, a priest, couldn’t see the supposed demon – or the snail’s tracks it was left on the floor — our woman of bluntness is forever speechless. “Because,” she said, “you’re no good.”
Like most Sinister Andrea’s demon hunts and chases are often more humorous than scary. The series’ Devil design has long been one of its best assets. (Sometimes literally, as in the case of a demon choosing to have sex with Andrea). she shouted into the thin air.
And while The Daily Beast will never spoil what will happen in this week’s finale, lest we be as haunted as those who choose to skip the show’s prologue, I will. this: Andrea has a lot of youkai to slay, and each one is more gorgeous than the last. But are those hairy, scaly and slimy ones really a bigger challenge for Sister Andrea than Kristen’s Daughters, she doesn’t stop talking and behaves rudely that she seems to have ruled? That could be a problem for Season 4 to deal with.
One thing we do know, however, is that Sister Andrea’s work is far from over. Although Martin, a seasoned comedian, loves the laughs she can bring to her role, what is really the basis of her character, as she put it. in a recent interview TV User ManualIt’s Andrea’s job.
“She can joke, she can talk about sex, she can talk about her own relationships, she can do all that,” Martin said. “But her mission is to completely remove evil from the world. And when your feet hit the ground like that, you can’t go too far anyway.” Listen, listen — and this is for more exorcisms (and hopefully more Andrea Martin) in Season 4.
