‘The Wheel of Time’ Isn’t for Every Fan

Amazon is hoping for their new series Wheel of timeBased on the books of Robert Jordan, will be the sequel Game of Thrones. Science Fiction Editor John Joseph Adams was captivated by the show.

“I thought it was great,” Adams said in Episode 507 of Geek’s Guide to the Galaxy audio file. “I don’t particularly like books, so I don’t care about adaptations — I don’t care if they change things or not. I basically took it as a new viewer, and honestly, I loved it. “

Wheel of time is one of Amazon’s more popular shows and has received mostly positive reviews, but some fans are still unsatisfied with the adaptation. imaginary author Douglas Cohen think Wheel of time made too many changes to the book. “I don’t really think much about writing, I don’t think much about acting,” he said. “I understand that changes happen when you translate one medium to another, but I don’t think they did the best they could with translating the books for the show.”

Science fiction author Abby Goldsmith agree. She thinks the relationships on the show aren’t right with the characters she knows in the books. “The strength of the series is the dynamics of the characters between individuals,” she said. “That’s what it’s really about. It’s almost like a soap opera. It’s really about people, heroes. And the show, for me, just throws it all away, completely ignoring that.”

But Geek’s Guide to the Galaxy host David Barr Kirtley given that the show will likely appeal to most fantasy fans, as long as they keep their expectations in check. “If you love epic fantasy and you want to watch a TV show or movie in that genre, there are very few examples to start with, and I feel this is quite good compared to what else is out there,” he said.

Listen to the full interview with John Joseph Adams, Douglas Cohen, and Abby Goldsmith in Episode 507 of Geek’s Guide to the Galaxy (above). And check out some highlights from the discussion below.

Douglas Cohen on Wheel of time book:

I finished the series even though I’m not that big of a fan in the end. Generally these days I feel like life is too short to waste on lousy books or TV shows, so if I don’t like something I turn it off, I stop reading. Wheel of time is my exception to that rule. I said, “I’ve loved these books for so long, I have to read the last one, I have to get to the final battle. I have to read that.” And I keep going. There was a time when I gritted my teeth just hating books. I said, “I don’t care. I will go to the end”. And that’s how I felt when I watched the show. I also have a need to see it, even though I don’t like it. And nothing else does it for me.

David Barr Kirtley on Wheel of time Part 1:

I think the first two episodes were actually quite enjoyable, then the next two episodes I had more mixed feelings about. The characters are out in the wilds, and they’re separated, and I feel like there’s too much of a conversation that’s essentially conveying a fairy tale or lore to the audience, and I feel a bit bored with it. surname. But then when they get to the White Tower, and there’s all the political infighting and factionalism inside Aes Sedai, I think that’s really interesting. And from there I think the show is pretty cool. I wouldn’t say it’s the best show ever, but like I said, given what’s on offer for epic fantasy, I think it’s a decent example.

Abby Goldsmith on characteristics:

Rand and Mat’s friendship is really strong in the books. I love it. Book 1 really goes into that, where Rand and Mat are like having their own little adventure together, where they have no money and they just play music for their dinner, in the wilderness, Explore the world and try to get back in touch with their friends. The friendship is strong, and it’s been there, and you don’t see it on the show at all. And Egwene and Perrin too. Perrin is the very protective, guardian type of character — the show didn’t show that. He sounds like this smug, taciturn guy on the show. I don’t want to go out with him.

John Joseph Adams on gender:

One criticism I don’t specifically give to the show, that’s just because of the source material in general, but the whole thing seems to be sexist in a way. “Women can do this, and men can’t do this.” It’s all really sexist. I’m sure it used to be very advanced back in the day to have these female characters who were amazing mages, and the men who couldn’t be amazing mages because they couldn’t handle it. … [But] Where in the world are non-binary or transgender people?
