Goose Goose Duck—a social reasoning game used by lazy-eyed geese, apparently, custom fart—breaking the Steam charts. The game has been out since 2021, released later Between us‘ team silhouettebut its recent popularity isn’t because of an inexplicable return of interest in playing detectives, but rather K-pop.
It seems to have started that way, at least. The game, which involved completing a mission with teammates while trying to unmask a traitor (or as one Steam review put it, “Amongoose”), made BTS member Kim “V” Tae-hyung‘S stream Weversewhere he plays multiplayer games like The fall boy with fans, back in november.
Weverse is the Patreon version of Korean entertainment company Hybe Corporation, basically, a place for fans to interact with BTS and with each other after they membership fee. And pay they do. On December 5, Tae-hyung of Goose Goose Duck stream has reached over 8 million views on fan app, Korean gaming magazine Game Meca report. Those views had a real impact. After the game launched on Weverse, the number of players skyrocketed—from about 4,000 players in November to 61,000 in December.
“In the 10 days after V aired, Goose Goose Duckthe number of users has increased 5 times and about two weeks later it has increased more than 10 times,” a translation of that Game Meca the article says.
But Tae-hyung didn’t stream Goose Goose Duck since November and the game is becoming more and more popular. On January 2nd, the great demand of the players forced the developers to server capacity enhancement. The game also recently hit an all-time high on January 5 with 563,677 concurrent players, SteamDB said. In comparison, Between us peaked 447,476 concurrent players two years ago. And that’s despite Tae-hyung stream that game in november, too. So maybe K-pop doesn’t have a golden touch. Maybe people just really love geese.
