Winter is dry and cold but as we enjoy this season we must also know a few changes that our lives skin experienced as our consciousness will help us take better care of our skin. Dry skin, eczema, rashes and allergies are common in this weather and these problems are more common in the elderly and in patients with other comorbidities such as diabetes, thyroid disorderset cetera.
In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Sneha Ghunawat, Consultant Dermatologist, Esthetician, Director and Co-Founder of Meraki Skin Clinic in Gurugram, suggests keeping the following tips in mind to prevent skin from returning should be very dry in winter –
1. Detergent: Use a mild soap-free cleanser for your skin. They don’t rob the skin of oils and are gentle on the skin. Face wash is a bit harsher. They foam more due to stronger foaming agents. These chemicals can dry out the skin, especially in winter.
2. Moisturizing: The use of a good quality dense moisturizer cannot be underestimated when we talk about fighting dry skin in winter. Choose creams over lotions as they are thicker and more suitable for winter. The oil also acts as a good emollient and is a good choice. Pre-shower oils can help lock in moisture and keep skin soft and hydrated. Coconut oil, avocado oil, and sesame seed oil are good choices. Apply a good moisturizer within 1 minute of bathing while skin is still slightly damp. This will help moisturize the skin better.
3. Avoid long hot baths: Although we love to relax by taking a hot bath, we must not forget that hot water dissolves the oils and leaves the skin rough and dry.

1. Proper cleaning: Using the right cleanser (then toner) will help you have healthy skin, but don’t overdo it. Over-cleansing removes the skin’s natural moisturizers.
2. Moisturizing for dry skin: Oil-based/cream-based moisturizers tend to be better than lotions for normal to dry skin. Also, if you have sensitive skin, use a fragrance-free or lanolin-free moisturizer! Pro tip: Apply moisturizer directly to wet skin after showering, that way, the moisturizer helps keep moisture on the surface.
3. Limit the use of hot water and soap: If you’re prone to “winter itch,” take a quick warm shower with a detergent-free and non-irritating cleanser (don’t forget to moisturize right after).
4. Cover your cracks: Your feet, hands, and lips beyond your face need love and care. To prevent chapping, use petroleum-based lip balms and moisturizers.
5. Avoid winter tan: Using a sunscreen with a sun protection factor of 15 or higher is essential if you intend to be outdoors for long periods of time.
6. Make sure your vitamin D levels are good: As winter approaches, your exposure to natural sunlight decreases and this affects your vitamin D levels. Taking vitamin supplements can do a lot for your skin.
7. Humidify your surroundings: Dry air tends to draw moisture from your skin, in such cases a room humidifier seems like a boon!
8. Consult a Dermatologist: Even more so if you have persistently dry, itchy, scaly skin. Also, if you have any skin issues that are bothering you, the sooner you address them before the big day, the better.
