Tornado warning issued for Fairview in northern Alberta Friday night – Edmonton
One tornado warning has been released to the community of Fairview in Northwest Alberta on Friday night, as a storm surge swept through much of the province.
At 10:06 pm, Canadian Environment said their meteorologists were monitoring a severe thunderstorm that could produce a tornado.
The storm was located about 15 km east of Fairview and was moving southeast at 40 km/h.
At 10:40 p.m., Environment Canada released a warning for the Fairview area as the storm passed.
It remains valid for the following areas:
- Birch Hills Co. near Eaglesham and Highway 740
- Smoky River’s MD includes Falher, McLennan and Guy
The National Weather Service said there could be damaging winds, large hail and local intense rain from the storm.
“This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches,” Environment Canada said.
“If you hear a rumbling sound or see a funnel cloud, debris swirling near the ground, flying debris or any approaching threatening weather, take cover immediately. “
If a tornado is detected, you should go inside a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows, such as basements, bathrooms, stairs or inside closets.
Leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers, and other permanent or temporary shelters, and move to a permanent building if you can. As a last resort, stay low and protect your head from flying debris, the warning said.
Fairview is about 530 kilometers northwest of Edmonton in the Peace River region.
Tornado warnings are issued when impending or ongoing thunderstorms have the potential to create or are creating tornadoes.
The warning came as Big Valley Jamboree in central Alberta halted events Friday night because of a severe thunderstorm.
