Toyota is the undisputed leader in hybrid technology in the Australian market, but it has yet to offer any electrification on its best-selling product. HiLux ute. That is set to change.
Sean Hanley, Toyota Australia’s vice president of sales, marketing and franchising, suggests HiLux scope will expand further this year.
“Of course, we don’t stand still with our HiLux range,” said Mr. Hanley. “Last year we launched [updated] HiLux Rogue, and it was very well received. In the third quarter of this year, we will launch the HiLux GR Sport.”
“In addition, we will have more action on HiLux in the second half of the year.”
“Our goal has always been to address market opportunities and customer needs with HiLux. At some point that will include some form of electrification, although I don’t intend to go into exact detail on that today,” he added.
Asked a follow-up question about that statement, Mr Hanley said:
“Obviously we have to look at commercial vehicles between now and 2030. So what kind of electrification we apply to that vehicle, we can’t say today. But it’s definitely something we know we’ll need to do.”
Toyota has yet to confirm whether the HiLux will adopt a petrol-electric hybrid powertrain as used in most of its cars and crossovers, or a diesel-electric hybrid, mild hybrid or plug-in hybrid.
“Hybrid, plug-in hybrid – there are all sorts of variants. We’re looking at H2 (hydrogen) conversion, we’re looking at BEV, we’re looking at everything. This is exactly what we are talking about – Toyota is not going to put all of our eggs in one basket,” said Mr. Hanley.
“What’s important to us in Australia is fit for purpose. And I know I said this was nauseating. Some people get it, and most of the silent majority actually get it. But of course, everyone has different opinions, and I respect everyone’s different points of view, because not all are wrong and not all are right.
“We never said that we would not electrify, that we would not produce BEVs. We are simply saying there is more than one option then just use BEV. To achieve carbon neutrality and be able to take customers on that journey, you have to make a choice. It’s as simple as that.”
