Trinamool on Parliament in favor of Minister Meghalaya Conrad Sangma
Shillong, Meghalaya:
The Meghalaya Parliament proposed “issue-based support” for the state’s BJP-Conrad Sangma coalition which was called for by the Trinamool Parliament. “A great betrayal” is how former State Minister Mukul Sangma – who recently joined Trinamool – called the proposal of the National Assembly, which is also the main opposition party in the country.
The National Assembly, weakened after its 11 MLAs, led by Mukul Sangma’s participation in the Trinamool Congress, admitted “its identity in opposition has been very blurred and confusing”. Earlier this week, following a meeting of the National Assembly Legislative Party, they made the move to blur the line between the government and the opposition.
There has been no response from the party’s central leadership yet.
“It reflects the fact that the Parliament in the state of Meghalaya is in complete turmoil … they are bewildered victims. By aligning with the ruling National People’s Party, a partner of the NDA and providing support is based on the issue of Government where BJP is a partner, Congress has taken a position, it is a great betrayal to the opposition,” said Mr. Sangma.
Last month, The 56-year-old leader has left the National Assembly along with 11 of the 17 other party MLAs in the state, participated in the Trinamool Congress in a major coup.
The development has fractured opposition unity ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha Poll as BJP rivals are scrambling to join hands and pose a collective challenge.
After a meeting earlier this week, Ampareen Lyngdoh, leader of the Parliamentary Legislative Party, said: “This will be support on issues of public concern and where the government and the opposition need to work closely together. We’ll see how this offer we made to the government works, but our identity in that opposition has been very fuzzy and confusing. I don’t know if we have to reconsider so many positions in the opposition that can now be vacant.
