Turtle Valley Donkey Refuge Society reopens to public with new programs – Okanagan
The beloved residents at the Turtle Valley Donkey Refugee Association have been out of public attention for more than two years.
Now the Chase, BC Society is reopening to the public.
“We’ve had some really good shows this year because we’re all still thinking about COVID,” said Shirley Mainprize, co-founder of the Turtle Valley Donkey Refuge Society.
The shelter is open to the public on weekends, has private reservations on Tuesdays, offers seniors programs, guided tours and more. To meet people in their comfort zone while getting to know and bond with the 105 donkeys cared for in it. The rescuers say donkeys are misunderstood animals.
“When you have donkeys in their senior years they are just like us. We hunch about our old years and [donkeys] Mainprize said.
Backdrop is a common term for Lordosis, which is a weakening of the supporting ligaments along the donkey’s spine.
“Don’ts don’t shed hair like horses. Where the horses are shedding like crazy, these hold up until June then shed with grooming, then it grows back in July,” says Mainprize.

Donations from the public are vital to continuing to care for abused, abandoned, and surrendered donkeys like the full-sized Siska donkey, who was at a shelter being killed in Saskatchewan, before being taken to the hideout.
She had a wound on her forehead that would not heal, an X-ray showed she had a traumatic injury and a piece of bone was causing her pain. After it was removed, Robert Miller, co-founder of the Turtle Valley Donkey Asylum Association, said she recovered mentally and physically from the abuse.
“The abuse she received didn’t stop her from trusting people, which is very odd. After such an impact, you’d think she wouldn’t trust them anymore,” says
