UN launches ‘Bodyright’ logo against online violence
United Nation:
The United Nations on Thursday launched a campaign against gender-based violence on the internet, with a ⓑ symbol that can be added to social media posts.
Logos seek to highlight that company logos and copyrighted Intellectual Property generally receive more protection online than in humans.
UNFPA’s campaign “freedom” says women, young people, minorities and the LGTB community must be protected from online violence.
“Everyone has the right to live free of fear and violence – both online and offline,” said UFNPA executive director Natalia Kanem.
“It’s time for tech companies and policymakers to take digital violence seriously.”
According to a poll by the Economist Intelligence Unit, 85% of women globally have experienced or witnessed digital violence against other women, and 38% have suffered from it.
UNFPA says online violence includes writing online, hate speech, defamation – the publication of private information about an individual – and the non-consensual use of images and videos, such as deepfakes.
It said the logo is a requirement that “images of our bodies are respected and protected online in the same way that copyright is in music, movies and even company logos.”
