CD Projekt Red has revealed that the new generation update, or “next generation update” as the studio calls it, for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, will be released on December 14. another month from today. As for what to expect, CDPR hasn’t revealed much else, but the studio will go into more detail and reveal the next-gen gameplay during a live stream next week. The delayed new generation update for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will be released in Q4 2022.
Back in April, CD Projekt Red announced that they had developed a new generation update for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt internally and that’s it. As a result of this change, the update was basically delayed indefinitely. Following reports that the delay was “development hell”, CDPR has issued a statement that this is not the case and now we know that the new generation update will be released in about three months. Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red announced last week that their new generation update for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, originally set for release in Q2 2022, is delay “until further notice.”
As for why, the studio said it is moving the development of the upgrade internally and assessing the scope of the update. However, many people see “until further notice” as a bad sign that the update is having problems, especially when CDPR revealed that they are no longer using an external studio. to handle the update, but instead do it yourself. Some reports call the delay “indefinite delay”, often with the implication “development hell.”
However, in a new investment call, CDPR Senior Vice President of Business Development Michał Nowakowski explained that delays are not development hell.
“I was looking at the headlines that popped up here and there on the internet and I saw one that really caught my attention, which was ‘Indefinitely delayed next generation Witcher 3’. looks like the game is in some kind of development hell,” Nowakowski said, as reported by PC Gamers. “I want to say that this is not true. There’s been a lot of hint that we’ll launch, like next June or something like that. That is absolutely not the case.
“All we are saying is, we developed the game in-house. That game will be completed in-house. We are evaluating our time, that requires a bit of investigation. That’s all we’re talking about. No one said the game was delayed [with] some epic time gap ahead of us. That’s a lot I can say about the next-gen Witcher, but I really want to emphasize that fact.”
PC Gamers reported that later on an investor call, Nowakowski told investors that “not many” developers were working on the next-generation update, estimated at 15 people with staff additional external support, which seems to indicate that the update is nearing completion.
“Taking over this project will not affect the development of our next game,” he said.
