US’ AATCC invites proposals from students for textile research funding
The application is a three-page application form that includes a description of the proposed project and a student resume. A letter of support from an advisor is encouraged but not required, the AATCC said in a press release.
Preference will be given to research related to the development of test methods, the evaluation of textile performance in real-life use cases and the correlation between the two. Grants will range from $500 to $4,000. Grant recipients can also claim up to $500 in additional reimbursement for travel and/or registration to present a research project at a technical conference. Additional instructions, application and submission details can be found on the AATCC Foundation website.
The AATCC Foundation’s Student Research Support Program provides financial assistance to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing textile-related projects. The application deadline is October 15, 2023, and the grant will be awarded in January 2024. Projects related to test method development, textile performance evaluation and correlation between the two are given priority.
The Research Support Program is chaired by Yiqi Yang of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Funding decisions are made by a panel of industry and academic experts from across the textile industry.
Previously selected projects range from tissue engineering to digital printing. Emmy Hsiung, a 2023 grant recipient from Cornell University, reported that the grant helped her investigate medical textiles and determined that chitosan/carvacrol nanofibers could be spun into cotton for improved thermal stability and rapid carvacrol release. She plans to submit her findings for publication in a journal AATCC Research Journal.
