The SDMR is a 7.62x51mm, semi-automatic rifle designed by Heckler & Koch for missions that require track combat with precision firing to accurately strike targets at depths to 600 meters.
SDMR was introduced to Air Force units this year. It is a multi-role asset, set up to handle multiple missions taking place around the world.
It will replace legacy M24 Sniper Weapon Systems for security force guards performing base defense operations in the garrison and in backup support.
The SDMR is lighter in weight than other 7.62 platforms and will also replace the M110 Semi-Auto Sniper System rifle for pararescuemen and Guardian Angels, saving them 5 pounds while on the mission.
Ultimately, SDMR’s precision firing capabilities will be used by Air Force Explosives Disposal technicians to eliminate small munitions during their bomb disposal operations.
“We are thrilled to be deploying this incredible weapons system,” said Matthew Hamer, head of the Small Arms Program Office. “Being able to deliver a solution that can effectively achieve multiple missions is an epitome of the Air Force’s acquisition strategies and demonstrates the Air Force’s ability to adapt to any situation. “.
