US Army orders more M109A7 self-propelled howitzers
BAE Systems on Wednesday said it has received a $299 million order to supply additional M109A7 self-propelled howitzers and ammunition carriers to the US Army.
According to a press release from the company, BAE Systems has received a $299 million contract from the US Army to manufacture 40 sets of M109A7 and M992A3 ammunition carriers.
The M109A7 is the newest howitzer in the BAE Systems M109 family of vehicles and the primary indirect fire support system for Armored Brigade Combat Teams (ABCT). The M109A7 program offers increasing similarity on ABCT and has significant growth potential in power capacity and weight.

“Delivers powerful, survivable and responsive indirect fire support capabilities,” said Scott Davis, vice president of ground vehicles for BAE Systems Combat Mission Systems business. The fastest response to ABCT is the main focus of our artillery program. “We are committed to providing a vehicle that will deliver the modernized capabilities ABCT needs to carry out missions with confidence.”
The M109A7 program is a significant upgrade over the vehicle’s predecessor, the M109A6 Paladin Self-propelled howitzer. The M109A7 vehicle design includes a new chassis, engine, powertrain, suspension, steering, new high-voltage architecture, and improved survivability.
BAE Systems received the first contract for the production of the M109A7 in 2017. This most recent order brings the total number of vehicle sets – the M109A7 tank and the M992A3 cargo, ammunition, and tracking vehicle (CAT) sets. number 310 and the total contract value up to 1.9 billion USD.
Manufacturing and supporting the M109A7 and M992A3 took place at the Anniston Army Depot in Alabama and the BAE Systems facilities in York, Pa; Minneapolis, Minn.; Sterling Heights, Mich.; Endicott, NY; Elgin, Okla. And Aiken, SC.
