Variable refresh rate arrives on PS5 later this week

The much-anticipated support for variable refresh rate (VRR) is coming PS5 this week.

A variable refresh rate synchronizes the monitor’s refresh rate with the game’s output. This eliminates frame rate and tearing issues that can occur if the game runs at a lower or higher frame rate than the monitor. The increased smoothness can also reduce input lag, essentially allowing for a quicker response when you press a button on the controller.

So far, VRR has only been supported on Microsoft’s Xbox Series S and X consoles.

The company hasn’t specified an exact date the update will land, but has recommended that you keep your PS5 connected to the internet. This is a welcome update for the PS5, making it more in line with the competition from Xbox.
