Victim dies from injuries 1 day after southeast Calgary shooting, 35-year-old man charged – Calgary
A 35-year-old man has been charged following a shooting in southeastern Calgary on Tuesday that left one person dead.
Police said officers were called to reports of a shooting at the 2200 block of 45 Street SE at about 8:10 a.m.
The victim was taken to the hospital in a life-threatening condition. In a news release on Wednesday night, police said he was “fighting with his injuries not long ago”.
Officials said the Calgary Police Service’s homicide unit is currently assisting with the investigation.
Martin Schiavetta of the CPS homicide unit said: “We believe this was a targeted attack and a senseless act that cost someone their life. “Thankfully, we were able to locate, arrest and charge the person believed to be responsible in less than 48 hours.”
Sam Frank Barbera is facing a number of charges in connection with the shooting, including one count of aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes and unlawful possession of a firearm.
Barbera also faces the following charges:
- One count of knowingly possession of a firearm or restricted weapon
- A crime of possession of a weapon committed by a criminal
- A purposeful launch of a gun
- Twice not complying with the release order
After consulting with Crown prosecutors, Barbera will also face additional charges related to the victim’s death, police said.
The shooting marks the 14th homicide and 66th shooting in Calgary this year, and police say the gun crime problem is being addressed by “several areas of the service through investigation.” , enforce and prevent.”
“While a significant portion of mass shootings are targeted in our city, gun violence does not only affect those involved in the crime. It puts our entire community at risk,” Schiavetta said.
