Victorians will no longer be able to get a $3,000 electric car subsidy from June 30 this year, as the heavily indebted State Government seeks to cut spending.
The decision to remove the rebate early was quietly included in the May State Budget papers, but was picked first by the EV-focused news site the push.
“The Victorian Government has had to make some tough budget decisions this year and unfortunately not all programs have been able to continue. Given the increase in demand for ZEVs over the past 12 months, the grant application will close at 6pm on June 30, 2023,” the government confirmed.
When the scheme is launched in May 2021, the Victorian government intends to provide more than 20,000 grants, rolled out in installments, ending no earlier than May 2024 unless all 20,000 grants are used previously used up.
“The ZEV subsidy will apply immediately to any eligible vehicle purchased from Sunday, May 2, 2021 until the rebates are fully committed or three years, depending on conditions.” which is achieved sooner,” said its fact sheet.
There are now 2776 subsidies remaining, the government announced. However, while we don’t have exact figures on current intake, it is likely that the number of Victorians who will benefit from this payment is less than this promised 20,000.

Buried in the State Budget papers is a statistic that says only 4713 Zero-Emission Vehicle Subsidy applications will be processed by 2022/23, compared with a target of 8600.
“Expected results for 2022-23 are lower than targets for 2022-23 due to continued supply delays and a decrease in the number of models eligible for the program due to the increase in vehicle prices. across the industry,” the report states.

Despite that, the State’s Zero Emission Vehicles Roadmap targets half of all light vehicle sales as zero-emissions (exhaust) vehicles by 2030.
Residents of most other States and Territories will still be entitled to lower tier electric vehicle discounts, including up to $6000 in Queensland, $3500 in Western Australia and $3000 in New South Wales and South Australia.
