VIDEO: Errol Spence Jr vs Yordenis Ugas
Coming up on April 16, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, in a weight unification match broadcast on Fox PPV, WBA super doubles champion Yordenis Ugas will face off against heavyweight champion Yordenis Ugas. semi-middle IBF / WBC Errol Spence Jr.
All that considered, this fight makes a lot of sense right now. Doesn’t make much sense like the most sensible weight class fight, the long-awaited and elusive potential showdown between Spence and Terence Crawford. But given the fact that Crawford and Spence seem unlikely to hit the terms, this is one of the next best consolation prizes. And ironically, this could also provide the final nail in the coffin for the showdown with Spence-Crawford, because Ugas will likely derail those best-laid plans.
Spence has only had one game in the last 30 months, as he defended his unified championship against Danny Garcia in December 2020. Spence won the match and was awarded a unanimous decision in round 12 for a very laborious endeavour. But marking that lone victory, Spence had been involved in a serious car accident before, and it was discovered he had a retinal tear later. In fact, Spence was supposed to have a big fight last August against Manny Pacquiao, but he had to withdraw when his eye injury was discovered. Ugas was the substitute, and he had a career-defining win over Pacquiao to earn a decisive 12th round.
So right now Ugas is on the cusp of his career, and Spence once again finds himself in a position where he has questions to answer.
