During the early years of the To them, the Scouts were one of the first rivals of the Willys Jeep, later known as the Wrangler. Like the Wrangler and similar concept Mercedes-Benz G-Class (aka G-Wagen), the Scout’s design and overall capabilities have changed little over the long run.

Volkswagen entered the fray in July 2021 when its commercial vehicle group TRATON acquired Navistar, along with all trademarks and intellectual property, in a deal worth approximately $3.7 billion. Scout was incorporated as a new company in July 2022, led by Scott Keogh, now the former president and CEO of the Volkswagen Group of America.
It is expected that the original Scout lineup will be a direct competitor to SUVs and pickups like the Rivian R1S/R1T and GMC HUMMER EV, with a focus on off-road capabilities. These vehicles are part of Volkswagen’s plan to introduce more than 25 all-new electric models to the US by 2030.
