Vulvodynia is a common problem that leads to menstrual pain in women but the condition is often unidentified and women tend to suffer silently because of unbearable pain in the vulva or external genital area. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Sushruta Mokadam, Senior Consultant Obstetrics and Gynecology at Motherhood Hospital in Pune’s Kharadi, revealed the causes of sitting for long hours, wearing tight pants, trauma or size like nerves in the groin area and pelvic floor muscles. weak. Speaking of symptoms, she emphasizes that irritation around the vaginal opening can arise from the use of chemical-laden products, a history of vaginal infections, hormonal factors, and inflammation. She says, “Women feel a lot of pain in the vulva, burning, throbbing, aching, pins and needles, stinging, itching, painful intercourse and dryness. One needs to consult a doctor when you notice these symptoms.”
Talking about the diagnosis, she says, “The doctor will look at a detailed medical history of previous infections, use of harsh vaginal hygiene products, or medication for other problems. A swab test in which the swab is placed on the upper thigh and slowly moved toward the external genital area to know the location and extent of pain may be advised. Once diagnosed with vulvodynia, one needs to follow the guidelines until complete remission is achieved.”
Regarding treatment, medical experts recommend: “Use the medicine as directed, maybe cream and ointment applied to the affected area. Some women, especially post-menopausal, will also be asked to opt for estrogen supplements to get rid of the pain. Other treatment modalities are physical therapy, massage, meditation, yoga, and even breathing exercises to relieve stress. Vulvodynia can affect sexual relationships and self-esteem. If not treated at the right time, this condition can lead to anxiety and depression. Therefore, women will be counseled to improve their mental health. Some tips for managing pain associated with vulvovaginitis are – don’t wear tight pants, wear cotton underwear, avoid using soaps containing chemicals to wash the vulva and use lubricants during intercourse fit.
