Wait, what? Cafe Bills customers for career space, Twitter in rage
A visit to our favorite restaurants or cafes is an experience that can’t be missed, especially in the post-pandemic era. We hit on our much-loved local haunts for a lively atmosphere, refreshing drinks and delicious food. While paying for services at any restaurant, there are certain things that we implicitly assume are included in the price of the food. For example, electricity costs, restaurant rent, ingredients for cooking and more. Imagine the surprise of a customer when his bill at a coffee shop includes the fee he takes up space there! Believe it or not, a cafe in Guatemala charged a customer as ‘career space’. Check out the tweet here:

The tweet was shared by user @jpdardon and it is an image of the receipt from a cafe called ‘La Esquina Coffee Shop’ located in the city of Quetzaltenago in Guatemala. There are three items on the bill mentioned in Spanish and the total given is 58 Quetzales or ‘Q’, which is the currency used in the country. While canned soda costs Q8, potatoes with cheese cost Q20, and ‘career space’ is billed at a whopping Q25. “Q58.30 most expensive in history. Let’s troll the restaurant,” the user wrote in his tweet in Spanish.
It’s not clear what restaurants mean by ‘career space’ and why they charge customers for that. Some reports suggested it was for restroom use, while other users speculated it was for restaurant use. Some Twitter users were angered by the bill shared on Twitter, which was circulated across platforms. “The cost of a low-consumption customer – in general- is very high,” said one respondent, while another wrote, “I’ve been to that cafe more than once (about a year ago). I have to say it’s so lonely, I don’t know if it’s because of this.”
Meanwhile, the cafe La Esquina sat up and paid attention to the online conversation. They released a statement about the incident saying it was an ‘involuntary fatal error’, a one-off, isolated incident and not due to policy. They added that the bug has been fixed in their system and asked for an apology for the same. “It was an isolated error for which, in the most humble way, we ask for a public apology to our team of respected and loyal customers,” they wrote in the statement. “We inform that our administration has done everything possible to contact the affected people for reimbursement and compensation for damage caused by provocation, which should not be done as it is not in principle. ours,” the Guatemalan cafe wrote in Spanish. “Let’s stress that this kind of collection has never been done in the past, nor will it be,” they added.
