It’s Charlotte Hale’s world; all others are just living in it. Or, in the case of WestworldThe latest episode of the latest episode, the clones of other people just living in it, were inadvertently controlled by her.
Season 4, episode 4 ends with another classic Westworldian carpet pulling, this time revealing that Hale (Tessa Thompson) has achieved her grand plan of replacing humans with hosts — or so it seems. And it’s all under her command. One of them is poor Caleb (Aaron Paul), who realizes that he, in his current form, is the 278th clone of the original human Caleb, who actually died 23 years ago. Now, this is no classic “OMG, he’s been a robot the whole time!” kind of gotcha Westworld was successful with us in previous seasons. Caleb was really a human when we first met him. But he was infected with a parasite caused by flies at the Delos lab, which essentially made him vulnerable to mind control and blurred his memories. Hale ends up testing him, but he doesn’t know it because each new iteration of Caleb is programmed with his real-life memories. He thinks he’s still his real self with a bit of brain fog; in fact he is a working copy through his program. Sorry.
Thompson explained Charlotte’s manipulation of Caleb to ELLE.com: “She basically tested him for a long time and, yeah, it didn’t work. However, we’ve seen this corporation, Delos, do it with the host over the course of the past three seasons. And the irony, of course, is that Charlotte Hale [as a human] was one of those who supported it. And that’s why [is] like a sweet justice, in a way, that Hale is after. ”
Remember, this version of Charlotte was introduced last season as a new host to Dolores’ show, but it’s clear she’s grown into her own self with motivation and focus. its own points since then. “The Charlotte Hale we meet this season has been around for a long time, having attempted to move towards a vision of the world with varying degrees of success,” Thompson said. “But I would say she is the mastermind. Maybe there’s a bit of a savior behind her plan. Thompson adds: “I think she’s trying to find the utopia for her people, for the homeowners, to find the utopia for them. “In her approach is as flawed as hers, I think she has some ideas based on some truth. And I really think, actually, it also comes from a place of real love, because of the limitless possibilities of this new organism’s sensory abilities in host form. So I don’t know. I think whenever you play someone, quoted, ‘villain’, you have to try to find who they are, their core, their center. And it was hard and fun to do it with her. “
No matter how terrifying Hale’s grand plan is, Thompson seems to be happy with his journey. First, she got to share more scenes with Paul, which was “such a joy,” she said. “He’s amazing, he’s good at that scene and every scene he’s in. And he’s also fun to be around, it’s a joy, especially when you have long days and you’re doing challenging jobs.”
And part of that joy, surprisingly enough, came from watching Paul perform Caleb’s WTF moment on this week’s episode. “It was fun to watch an actor as talented as Aaron Paul get through this information and realize that the reality he knows and understands may not be the truth,” Thompson said with a laugh.

Definitely our emotional landscape. Life is chaotic. We are not always in control of our reality.”
Consider it a madness — or, as Thompson puts it, “a beautiful chaos” — for both the viewer and the characters.
In the end (at least in this episode), Charlotte wins; and with everyone’s will at her fingertips, she seems unstoppable. But she is not invincible. When asked about Hale’s weakness, Thompson pointed out her “recklessness, impatience, tough determination, which can get in the way of her really being able to absorb what others have to say.” That’s probably Hale’s flaw as she’s also in the flesh, she added.
“So I think that’s also a nice irony of the show, that we can grow and change, but there’s something in our core that can’t be shaken. , which we are bound to encounter at every turn,” Thompson said. “I think that’s what’s fascinating about Hale and more broadly what the show poses, in general, about our human nature.”
