What is the origin of the journey?
Since 2017, Cruise has been refining its systems using the Chevrolet Bolt EV as their platform. The company has tested its technology in the metropolitan areas of San Francisco, Detroit, Phoenix and Austin. Their work on fully autonomous technology took a major step forward in 2020 when the state of California granted them permission to use their roads for testing purposes. In 2021, Honda
invested in Cruise and asked the company to bring Origin to its native Japan, with the first prototypes hitting the streets of Tokyo in September 2022.
As for Origin itself, it’s basically a wheelchair with sliding doors on either side and benches facing each other. An available ramp makes it easy for people in wheelchairs to get in and out. Cruise is also building an Origin version of its delivery services that includes secure lockers for people to pick up their items at designated locations.
An array of cameras, radar, and lidar sensors help Origin navigate. Naturally, the car is all-electric and is designed for a million-mile run time. Cruise Origin is still in beta. If everything goes well in the test markets, expect production to quickly scale up to other major metropolitan areas.
