WhatsApp backups on Google Drive may be allocated limited storage in the future
WhatsApp backups on Google Drive may no longer receive unlimited storage space in the future as several references appeared online suggesting a backup limit for Android devices in progress. WhatsApp users on iPhone already have limited space to store iCloud backups. However, this is not the case for Android users as so far they have been given unlimited storage on Google Drive to keep their chat backups. WhatsApp may introduce some changes to help users manage the size of their backups on Android.
According to a report via WhatsApp beta tracker WABetaInfo, several strings appeared in the code of the instant messaging app suggesting an in-place update.
Screenshot shared by WABetaInfo showing strings indicating a message to notify the user when Google Drive is almost full and is reaching a given quota. These warnings can be given when users back up their WhatsApp chats. Furthermore, users can be given options to exclude certain file types from being backed up to avoid filling up their given limit.
The code reported shows that Google will provide a certain quota to store WhatsApp backups. It can be over and above the 15GB free storage available on Google Drive. The change is not like the current case where Google Drive has unlimited storage to keep backups from WhatsApp.
ONE support page shows that current WhatsApp backups do not use the limited Google Drive storage available to the user. However, iPhone users do not have this privilege because Apple consider WhatsApp backups as part of icloud storage allocation.
Gadgets 360 has reached out to both WhatsApp and Google for comment on the update. This article will be updated as the companies mentioned respond.
It won’t be a surprise to see Google end its unlimited storage allotment for WhatsApp backups like the company did last year. unlimited free storage benefit ended provided to users for Google Photos. The change can be seen as a move that convinces users to receive Paid Google One plan starting from Rs. 130 a month in India ($1.99 in the US) for basic 100GB cloud storage access.
In September, WhatsApp introduced End-to-end encrypted cloud backup for both Android and iOS device to protect chats. Feature Launching worldwide users in October.
