Wheat production to fall by 3%, but grain output to hit new high | India News
NEW DELHI: India’s wheat production is forecast to drop by nearly 3% to 106.8 million tonnes (mt) while total food grains production is estimated to hit a record 315.7 tonnes in crop year 2021 -22, about 5 tons higher than the output in the 2020-21 crop year.
Wheat production is estimated to have declined as a heat wave during its ripening period resulted in grain shrinkage in the northwestern states of the United States. Punjab and Haryana.
Release estimates by Wednesday for MY 2021-22 (July to June), Ministry of Agriculture on Wednesday said a record production is also estimated to include rice, corn, grams, beans, oilseeds and sugarcane. However, coarse grain production is likely to decline slightly to 50.9 tonnes in 2021-22 from 51.3 tonnes in the previous year.
Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar attributed the record production of many crops to the “farmer-friendly policy of the central government”, the hard work of the farmers and the industriousness of scientists.
