It took me some time to adjust the meal plan and prep work to the idea of defrosting meat. Now, however, it’s about checking the freezer, choosing the items I want to use for the week, and planning my recipes and meals around them.
I keep my meal plan (free template download here under home resources) on the side of the refrigerator. When I make dinner every night, I look the next day, see what protein it’s called, then put it in the fridge to defrost overnight. Read about proper defrosting here.
I double-check my morning meal plan to see if I need to prepare anything early. In case I forgot to defrost it the night before, I took it out of the freezer and defrosted it in a bowl of cold water.
It sounds a bit more laborious to only buy fresh every week, doesn’t it? That is. I mean, I’m used to the process by now, but it takes an extra mental step. So why would I pick it up instead of just picking it up at the grocery store every week? For me, it’s mostly about quality.
Butcher Box offers 100% finished grass and grass-fed beef, free-range organic chicken, humanely raised pork and wild-caught seafood. Even at high-end grocery stores, you need to read the clear print on the protein options they offer to ensure quality (like the color added to salmon, for example).
For me, getting everything from Butcher Box means I have to reorganize one thing a week. I believe in quality.
Two other elements that I like about the Butcher Box are:
- Convenience. It came to my door and I shipped it right into my freezer.
- Special members. They send an email a month before my shipment is packed, allowing me to change it up as I please. This also gives me the opportunity to try new items that I have never had before that can be discounted or bundled together at a discounted price.
- Selection. I appreciate their wide selection of everything from chicken and pork to turkey and seafood. Having so many options as a general store has been very helpful in keeping me organized.

Hamburgers. These are great because you cook them straight from the frozen food. They’re big and delicious and the SIX comes packaged in a pack, so there’s enough in one to feed us all. David and Hailey usually have 2 kids, while Kaitlyn and I have 1.
Smoked pork. Because it’s delicious, the cut bacon is thicker (some grocery store bacon is shaved very thin) but also because it’s not simmered and has no added nitrates and sugars. I baked it in the oven until crisp and drained on paper towels.
Pork loin and pork butt with bones. It’s hard to find quality pork in the grocery store. Pork tenderloin is a family favorite around here (using this sauce but marinated in sugar to add honey) and I swear the boneless pork butt makes the flavor much richer and more delicious.
Chicken is also a staple in all of my boxes. I usually buy breasts, but lately I prefer thighs because they have more flavor. Especially with lemon and oregano leaves.
Consider:
- I had a few items showing up punctured. I probably shouldn’t admit this, but I’ve defrosted them and put them to good use. However, if this happens to you, report it and get a credit or free added broken items to your next box.
- To find ranchers they trust, Butcher Box sources most of their beef from Australia, and their chicken and pork from the US and Canada. Check out their sourcing page for more information. While it’s from finished, grass-fed cows, happily, it’s not local.
