Why was Rashid Khan not kept? SunRisers Hyderabad CEO Explained
The farewell between long-legged Afghan athlete Rashid Khan and SunRisers Hyderabad was one of the most discussed events of the IPL retention that took place on Tuesday. SRH CEO K Shammi has revealed the reason behind SRH’s failure to retain their gun players ahead of the IPL 2022 major auction. Shammi said Rashid opted to participate in the auction group in hopes of receiving better prices and the franchise respects the decision of the foot spinner. However, the SRH CEO was quick to add that the Hyderabad-based franchise will try to pick Rashid in the big auction at “the right price”.
“It’s a tough decision but if a player wants to enter the auction for the price, we certainly respect his choice. We’ll try to match it and see if we can. choose him at the right price in the auction or not”. SRH CEO K Shammi said on Star Sports during the IPL shutdown.
Rashid got his first SKSS / SKTD at IPL 2017 for 4 crore. After a pretty good debut season, Rashid’s shares rallied and his price surged to 9 crore in 2018 auctions where the Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab) made high bids. but SRH, quite to be expected, used their Right to Match (RTM) card to get him for the same price.
In the 76 games Rashid has played for SRH so far at IPL, he has picked up 93 catches for an impressive economy of 6.33.
Leggie Afghanistan took to Twitter to thank the franchise for supporting them over the past five seasons.
“It’s been a wonderful journey with @sunrisershyd Thank you for supporting, loving and believing in me. To #OrangeArmy, you have been my pillar of strength and I will forever be grateful to you all. Such a great fan,” Rashid tweeted on Wednesday.

“We are pleased to announce that the following players have been retained ahead of next year’s big auction. No. 1 Kane Williamson, our captain. The No. 2 player that has not yet been selected is Abdul Samad and No. 3 player Umran Malik also dropped out. We believe these players will lay a solid foundation for success for the next season and beyond,” said SRH director of cricket Tom Moody .
SRH bowling coach Muttiah Muralitharan explains why Williamson is the franchise’s first choice.
“Kane is one of the best captains and his performance in the IPL for us has been pretty good. He’s scored 700 spot runs for us in a season, he’s the type of player. We wanted to make sure we captain first and that’s why we picked Kane Williamson. The other two players are the most talented young players,” he added.
