Red sky and bitter ash air is increasingly common over much of the United States as the warming climate powers the Forest fires. For many years now, researchers have understood that wildfire smoke, and Toxic gases and soot particles it brings, not just an unpleasant experience that forces people to close the windows and shepherd the children in the house. But new research shows that the threat is more complex than previously known — and also more dangerous, if that’s possible. The turbulent convection in those giant beams can pick up pathogens from disturbed soil and charred vegetation and carry them long distances from the fire routes. Many of these bacteria are still alive and potentially causing an infection. Of these, researchers are most worried about fungi, which cause internal infections that grow slowly, are difficult to diagnose and treat, and can be disabling and even fatal. That includes fungal valley feverlurking in the dry soil of the West, causing a serious pneumonia-like illness, and is spreading northward as the climate warms.
Thanks to drones carrying samplers, there is evidence that plumes of smoke are packed with live bacteria and fungi. An early study linked a major California fire in 2017 to a growing number of fungal infections in hospital patients 200 miles away. Currently, several research projects are trying to pinpoint the microbial composition of smoke and correlate infection profiles with maps of the directions in which smoke travels during the fire season.
“We have discovered that many bacterial and fungal pathogens pose a significant risk, especially for their immunocompromised patients,” said George R. But proving a link to any one patient’s illness can be challenging, he points out: “These plumes will often go through multiple states.
