Update Ukraine
It has been almost 150 days since Russia invaded Ukraine with an assertion of power that sent shockwaves around the world. Russia now controls than more than 20% of the country. Recently, the heaviest fighting has been centered on the industrial area of Donbas in the east. The Moscow-backed army said it was moving on to its next target, Siversk.
Last week a midday rocket attack in the city of Vinnytsia kills 23 peopleincluding three children under 10 years old. The attack coincided with a meeting Ukraine’s top war crimes prosecutor and European judicial authorities to coordinate the investigation of more than 20,000 alleged war criminals by the Russians. Meanwhile, negotiations aimed at liberating cereal Exports from Ukraine will also continue.
We will be looking at some of the latest news lines.
Elections in Kenya
On August 9, Kenyans will go to the polls to elect their next president. The two main presidential candidates, Raila Odinga and Vice President William Ruto, will go head-to-head in a lengthy but relatively peaceful run-off until Election Day. Both Ruto and Odinga have condemn acts of political violence, disrupting past elections when ethnic divisions were stirred up to win the right to vote.
Latest survey by two top opinion polls put Odinga slightly ahead, but no candidate is likely to pass the 50% plus one vote target to win the presidency in the first round. With the race so intense, some political observers are expecting that the candidates’ debate on July 26 will play a key role in who will come out on top on election day.
As Kenyans head to the polls in a few weeks, we’ll ask what we can expect from the campaign’s final push.
