Women Angel City FC, Mexico play friendly on September 5 in LA
Through a multi-year partnership with SUM (Soccer United Marketing), NWSL’s Angel City FC and the Mexican women’s national team have officially announced a friendly match at Los Angeles’ Banc of California Stadium on Jan. September 5.
The international club-to-country exhibition, dubbed “Copa Angelina”, is part of an extended marketing run from FMF and SUM (the commercial/marketing arm of MLS). The two often collaborate in friendly matches in the United States and commercials of Mexico men’s national team. In May, FMF extended a six-year contract with SUM.

“We are delighted to partner with FMF [Mexican Football Federation] and SUM will host the first annual event featuring national and professional teams and bringing together our communities, cultures, cities and nations,” said the president of the Angel City FC, said Julie Uhrman.” We look forward to growing Copa Angelina year after year. “
The Athletic’s Meg Linehan recent report that “additional teams may be added in the future” of the Copa Angelina, along with “amount of prize money that may be added, other venues considered” will take place in the future.
Ahead of the match on September 5, the Mexican women’s national team will compete in the CONCACAF W Championship in July which will be held in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon. Along with the United States and Canada, eight nations will compete in what is considered a qualifier for the 2023 Women’s World Cup and the 2024 Summer Olympics.
In the current NWSL 2022 season, Angel City FC is in sixth place on the standings. Earlier this month, the club revealed that star striker Christen Press has been placed on End of season injury list after tearing her right ACL.
