Women, children among 11 dead in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh, after falling into wedding tragedy
Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh:
Eleven people, including women and children, died after accidentally falling into a well during a wedding ceremony in a village in Kushinagar district, east of Uttar Pradesh last night.
According to officials, the women and children at the wedding were sitting on a stone slab covering an ancient well. The slab collapsed under the weight and the people sitting on it fell into the well. They were rushed to the hospital, where 11 people were declared dead. Two people were seriously injured in the incident.
Pictures from the hospital showed loved ones, still at their wedding, mourning their loved ones lost in the tragedy. District Judge S Rajalingam told the media: “We received information that 11 people were dead and two others were seriously injured after they accidentally fell into a well. This happened during a wedding programme, where some people were sitting on a well slab, and due to the heavy load, the slab collapsed”.
The senior official said compensation of Rs 4 lakh will be paid to the family of each person killed in the incident.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the incident as “heartbreaking”, expressing condolences and praying for the speedy recovery of those injured.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his condolences over the tragedy. The official moderator of the Office of the Minister tweeted that he has directed relevant officials to conduct immediate rescue and relief operations and give appropriate treatment to the injured.
Further investigation into the incident is underway.
