While Volvo’s path into the electric car era is being led by a range of SUVs — from XC40 and C40 recharge to full size coming soon EX90—Another brand owned by Volvo’s parent company Geely is taking a different approach. Zeekr, sold exclusively in the Chinese market, began production of its first EV last year, with the 001 in the shape of a glittering station wagon. Now, Zeekr has unveiled its second electric vehicle, the 009, which sports a blocky pickup truck body with brutal styling.
009 rides on the same platform as the 001, which also underpins the Smart number 1. Two electric minivan versions are available. A 116.0 kWh battery pack offers 436 miles of range, and an upgrade to a massive 140.0 kWh battery has a 511-mile range in China’s test cycle, which usually produces more optimistic results compared with testing conducted by EPA. Zeekr claims the 116.0 kWh battery can recharge from 10 to 80 percent in 28 minutes. The 009 also shares the dual-motor powertrain found in the 001, providing the all-wheel-drive minivan with 536 horsepower and 505 pound-feet of torque. That’s enough to propel this brick to 62 mph in 4.5 seconds.
Along with impressive performance numbers, the 009 also stands out for its unorthodox design. The cube-shaped front grille features a series of vertical LED strips and shiny chrome, while the front lights are a simple upside-down U-shape, while the taillights have dozens of complex LED units. Despite its bulky styling, Zeekr claims a drag coefficient of 0.27 for the 009. The 20-inch wheels are supported by unequal-length controlled suspension at the front and a multi-link design. at the rear and air suspension all around.
With the 009 stretching 205 inches, its interior is cavernous and opulent, with space for six and leather, massage-covered captain seats in the second row. The dashboard is centered around a 15.4-inch touchscreen, with a 10.25-inch display in place of the gauge cluster, while the second row of seats is treated as a 15.6-inch bare screen. There is also a 20-speaker Yamaha surround sound system. 009 is dripping in future technology, with voice and facial recognition, artificial intelligence virtual assistants and 30 advanced driver assistance systems that work through dozens of cameras and 13 radar sensors.
The 116.0 kWh version will start at the equivalent of $68,450 at current exchange rates, while the 140.0 kWh 009 will cost $80,660. Deliveries will begin in January, and while the 009 will most likely never reach US shores, we expect that outside thinking will shift to other Geely brands: Volvo, Polestar and Lotus.
