Some things don’t go together well. Oil and water, dumb people and scientific facts, and luxury electric SUVs with faux wood side panels. The following example is the only one relevant here, and it depicts the 2023 Nissan Ariya Surfwagon concept that is set to debut at this year’s Special Equipment Market Association show (now called only is SEMA).
We’ll be blunt here. The wood-inspired Surfwagon concept that Nissan commissioned South Carolina-based Tommy Pike Customs to build looks very odd. After all, the tall and bulbous figure of the electric Ariya is not exactly an attractive canvas to work with. Maybe that’s why its wood-paneled vinyl wrap looks so out of place to our eyes. That’s mainly how the simulated wooden trim pieces bend and break around the SUV body in an unnatural way.
Usually, a set of white tires mounted on rims with no grooves painted in a bright color is a duo that catches our attention. The Surfagon’s wheel-and-tire combination definitely left us gasping, just not in a good way. The 20-inch wheels have too many items and the tires have too little white wall, creating a strange aesthetic. We think it would be nicer with smaller diameter rims and fatter rubber with thicker white walls.
Obviously, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Nissan intends for the Ariya Surfwagon to encourage people to customize electric vehicles. Hey, we’re all for creativity and individuality, but that doesn’t mean we have to think the concept is pretty. We think the rake roof for the surfboard and lowered suspension are nice touches, so there’s that.
