Punjab Parliament Speaker Navjot Singh Sidhu on Saturday expressed delight at the reopening of the Kartarpur Corridor and said it has come to fruition with the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Imran Khan. .
Mr. Sidhu made these remarks during a press conference in Gurdaspur of Punjab after returning from a visit to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur, Pakistan.
“The reopening of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor was made possible with the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan,” said Mr.
“I asked if you want to change lives in Punjab, we should open our borders (for cross-border trade.) Why should we go through Mundra Port, total 2,100 km? Why not from here , which is only 21 km (to Pakistan),” he added.
His visit comes after a new controversy erupted in the Punjab Parliament after Mr Sidhu was removed from the delegation, led by Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, which included cabinet ministers who had visited Kartarpur Sahib on Thursday.
The 4.7-kilometer visa-free Kartarpur Corridor, connecting the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan, the final resting place of Sikh founder Guru Nanak Dev, with the Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district, has reopened. again on Wednesday. The corridor, which began operating in 2019, was closed following the COVID-19 pandemic.
Earlier, Pakistan’s Imran Khan government praised Mr Sidhu for his role in opening the corridor to the Sikh pilgrimage site Kartarpur Sahib.
