Asmussen Quintet Tunes Up for Breeders ‘Cup
Coach Steve Asmussen sent five Breeders’ Cup contenders to work Sunday in Keeneland.
Sealant won I Claire (Curlin) and Society (Gunman), working in the company, shot 5 feathers in one bullet: 59.80 (1/34) in preparation for the GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff on Nov. 5. The duo worked through the fractions of: 11.80, :23.80, :35.60, :47.60, :59.80 and out six subdivisions in 1:13.20.
Epicenter (Not this time), off since won HOLD Runhappy Travers S. August 27 worked five extended divisions within the company at 1:00.20 (3/34) to prepare for the GI Breeders’ Cup Classic on November 5. The sophomores worked. through fractions of: 12.60, :24.60, :37.40, 1:00,20 and out six parts extending in 1:14.
Champion Echo Zulu (Gunman), targeting GI Breeders’ Cup F/M Sprint, accompanied 5 teams with the first winner being Marsalis (Curlin) in 1:02.80 (25/34). The personality girl, who suffered her first career loss while finishing fourth in the GI Kentucky Oaks, recovered with her previous September 24 GII Dogwood S. win.
Also working on Sundays at Keeneland, GI Breeders’ Cup Minor contender Big Love (Gunman) went five pairs of trousers at 1:00.60 (7/34) while working with first winner Bella Runner (Gunman).
Asmussen said on Sunday: “They make good and solid moves. “They do well and cool off wonderfully, and we’ve got Jackie’s Warrior [working] tomorrow. I am extremely pleased with the way the preparations went. The weather has been great. The tracks are in good condition and I love the shape of them. “
Coach Wesley Ward had a pair of Breeders’ Cup contenders working Sunday in Keeneland. Kimari (Munnings), considered possible for the GI Breeders ‘Cup Sprint or GI Breeders’ Cup F/M Sprint, worked five that lasted for 1:00.60 (7/34). Nakatomi (Firing Line), a possible Sprint candidate, worked half a mile in: 48.80 (10/50).
