All-party meeting today before the winter session of the National Assembly
New Delhi:
The repeal of the agriculture law will be one of the main topics at today’s all-party meeting likely to be chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a day before the start of the Winter Session of Parliament.
The meeting – which will also likely see the issue of price increases and farmers’ demands for a legal guarantee of the Minimum Support Price being raised – will begin at 11am.
The government’s bill to repeal the agricultural law was listed for introduction and adoption at the Lok Sabha on the first day of Monday’s session.
The bill will be introduced in the house by Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar.
The ruling BJP and the main opposition Congress party issued whips to their MPs present on the day.
“Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar will be taking leave of absence to introduce the Farmers’ Agreement (Empowerment and Protection) Repeal Bill on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020, 2020. Production and Trade Trade (Farmers Promotion and Facilitation Act), 2020, Essential Goods (Amendment) Act, 2020 and to amend the Essential Goods Act, 1955. Also to introduce the bill, “Lok Sabha’s Business List for November 29th states.
The same evening, the BJP will hold a parliamentary executive meeting. The leaders of the NDA exchange are expected to meet around 3pm.
Farmers on Saturday postponed their call for a ‘sansad chalo’, or ‘march to Parliament’, after a meeting of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha farmers’ front. It said it would wait until December 4 before announcing its next decision.
Last week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a stunning overthrow, said the agricultural law would be rolled back and demanded that farmers refuse and return home, which they refused.
Their farmers say the hysteria will continue until the laws are formally repealed and all requirements, including legal guarantees for the MSP, are met.
