Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar was jailed for 4 years
Yangon:
A Myanmar court on Monday jailed civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi for four years for inciting dissent against the military and violating Covid rules, a government spokesman said. authorities told AFP.
Suu Kyi “was sentenced to two years in prison under section 505(b) and two years in prison under the disaster law,” army spokesman Zaw Min Tun said.
Former president Win Myint was also jailed for four years on the same charges, he said, adding that they would not be sent to prison.
“They will face other charges from where they are now” in the capital Naypyidaw, he added, without giving further details.
Ms. Suu Kyi, 76, has been detained since generals overthrew her government in the early hours of February 1, ending Myanmar’s brief period of democracy.
The administration has since added a host of other charges, including official secrecy act violations, corruption and election fraud. The Nobel laureate would face decades in prison if found guilty on all counts.
Journalists have been barred from proceedings at the special court in the military-built capital, and Suu Kyi’s lawyers were recently barred from speaking to the media.
More than 1,300 people have been killed and more than 10,000 arrested in a crackdown on dissent since the coup, according to a local monitoring group.
